Dance Videos

Dance videos originated in the Sixties and Seventies when clips were distributed to promote the latest singles. Most often these clips were low budget live performances.
In the early Eighties, with the arrival of MTV, that all changed. Budgets exploded as artists tried to outdo each other with the biggest and the best.
Some videos were actually "short films". Michael Jackson, for example, spent over $1 million dollars and hired a famous movie director for his "Thriller" video.
As the market became glutted with promotional clips, artists tried other ways to differentiate themselves to gain media attention. "Berlin" released the first X-Rated video for their single "Sex (I'm a...)".
Meanwhile, the storyline of Madonna's "Like a Prayer" video courted controversy by using religious imagery to make a political statement on racism. Her video for "Justify My Love" a few years later was labelled "soft porn" and banned from MTV.
By the late Nineties, music clips were no longer being shown regularly on tv and in the new Millenium, the internet replaced television as the biggest worldwide outlet for video. The internet has eliminated the risk that a video won't get seen and therefore more videos than ever are being made at every budget imaginable.
Creativity has also blossomed online as fans get in on the action. Some "fanmade videos" on YouTube are getting as many hits as the "official version".
