DJ Mix

DJ Mix, Dance Music:
Once upon a time, dance club DJs simply spun records. They had no part in creating the music. Their special talent came from working a dancefloor into a fever pitch. They opened with warmup tracks, gradually built up momentum, peaked with their most crowd pleasing anthems and, just before closing, helped the crowd "cool down".
Then labels discovered that the clubs presented a great promotional opportunity and that club DJs could help them exploit it. The "dance remix" was born.
At first DJs simply laid beats underneath the existing vocal and music. In order to make the vocal fit the dance beat, they would often change it's speed by dragging the record or pulling it faster. Junior Vasquez used this technique on his remix of Olivia Newton John's "Hopelessly Devoted to You".
As remixes gained in popularity, many labels sent their artists back into the studio to re-record the vocals to fit the beat. Sometimes an entirely new song emerged. This is exactly what happened when Thunderpuss remixed (and reproduced) the Jennifer Lopez hit "Feelin' So Good". The club version bears little in common with the original CD version.
More often though, it was simply necessary for the artist to sing the lyrics faster with the original melody in tact. Whitney Houston did this for her now classic dance version of "It's Not Right, But It's OK" remixed by Thunderpuss.
It isn't always necessary to re-record the vocal, however. Sometimes the tempo of the vocal is perfect. The remix artist simply adds additional elements and layering of sounds to the song to "heat it up" for the clubs. This is exactly what Grammy Winner Hex Hector did on his Mementous Mix of "Waiting for Tonight" by Jennifer Lopez.
Some dance DJs like Hex Hector, Junior Vasquez, Offer Nissim, Peter Rauhofer, and Victor Calderone, to name a few, have become so popular that they are often bigger than the artists that they mix. On CD Singles, they share top billing with the artists and many release their own CDs in a twist that sees the DJ become the artist.
