In 1992, Polar Music International released "Gold", ABBA's first worldwide compilation CD in years. To everyone's surprise, a full decade after the group had disbanded, "Gold" sold millions of copies and topped charts in over a dozen countries.
For disco fans, this CD (and it's followup "More Gold") brought back memories of the band's late 70s heyday. It was a time when disco music was sweeping the world.
Although the group had flirted with dance music on their #1 hit "Dancing Queen, they hadn't up to that point strayed far from their pure pop home. But this was about to change as they prepared their next single.
"Summer Night City" (found on "More Gold") was released in late 1978. It was their first disco song and one the few tracks that they recorded where the male vocals were actually more prominant than those of the female leads, Agnetha and Frida. Their fans weren't quite sure how to react but they nonetheless propelled the track to the Top 5 in Britain and Germany and Top 3 in Australia.
ABBA Songs, ABBA MP3:
In 1979, ABBA unveiled their dance CD "Voulez Vous". The disco singles from the CD were "Does Your Mother Know" and the double A side release "Angeleyes/Voulez Vous". As was typical of the group, the CD contained many other single-worthy uptempo tracks like "If It Wasn't for the Nights" and "Kisses of Fire". Even the B side to the "Chiquitita" single, namely "Lovelight" ("More Gold"), became a much played favorite.
Near the end of 1979, they released their Greatest Hits, Volume II to coincide with their worldwide tour. That set's lead single was the disco track "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight") which became yet another smash hit.
The "Super Trouper" CD in 1980 yielded two more dance hits: "On and On and On" and "Lay All Your Love on Me". "On and On and On" was the second single from "Super Trouper" in many countries, most noteably Australia where the song was a top 3 hit. "Lay All Your Love on Me" was released in Spring, 1981 as a limited edition 12" single. It topped the U.S. Club Chart and became a mainstream hit in Britain.
ABBA's final CD of original material came later in 1981. That CD contained one final uptempo dance track "The Visitors". Though never a single, "The Visitors" was included on the 1993 compilation CD "More Gold".
